Tooth Extraction
What is a Tooth Extraction?
An extraction involves fully removing one or more of your teeth. In some cases, there is no other way to save a tooth than to completely extract it. In other cases, extractions help to prevent future dental problems, as is the case with wisdom teeth. Regardless of the type of extraction needed, we do our best to ensure the procedure is quick and comfortable for you.
Why is a Tooth Extraction needed?
There are many reasons why an extraction may be needed. We always offer other treatment options before extracting a tooth. Some of the reasons you may need an extraction include:
- Impacted wisdom teeth
- A tooth has severely broken or cracked
- A tooth is decayed and loose
- You want to avoid more invasive procedures
- A baby tooth is being stubborn
Who is a good candidate for a Tooth Extraction?
We first perform an examination to determine if you might need an extraction done. If you’re going to be fitted for dentures, you may need to have multiple teeth removed before the prosthesis is made for you. If available, we’ll offer other treatment options before fully removing the tooth. Extractions are always done to improve the health of your smile.
What happens during a Tooth Extraction?
We start by administering a sedative or anesthetic according to your needs. The next step is to remove the tooth fully using special tools and instruments. The gums may receive sutures if this is needed. You will be sent home with aftercare instructions to help the area heal properly. Extractions are simple oral surgeries and can be done on patients of all ages. We will consult with you and perform an examination before any type of extraction is performed. If you’re going to be having a denture made, this will be done as soon as your gums have time to heal completely to improve the fit of the prosthetic.
If you think you might need an extraction, call our office and we will be happy to get you in for an appointment.
