Dental Sealants

What are Dental Sealants?

Sealants are protective coatings applied to the back teeth. They work by forming a barrier between your teeth and any plaque and bacteria in the mouth. When applied correctly, sealants can prevent cavities and deep staining. They can last for up to three years before re-application is needed.

Why are Dental Sealants needed?

Sealants are most beneficial for children who are prone to developing cavities or who may not have the best brushing or eating habits. They’re a great way to protect the teeth and the eventual need for fillings and root canals. However, despite sealants being mostly used on pediatric patients, they can be just as beneficial for adults. Adults can benefit from the protective nature of sealants and the ability to prevent decay from happening in the first place.

Who is a good candidate for Sealants?

Any patient who is looking to protect their teeth and avoid cavities is a good candidate for sealants. There is no age restriction on sealants and both pediatric and adult patients can benefit from them. Because sealants are clear, no one will know they’re even on your teeth. We can check on your sealants at each of your bi-annual appointments and reapply them as needed.

What happens during a Dental Sealant procedure?

We will clean and dry the back teeth before anything else is done. The liquid sealant is carefully brushed over the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. We then use a curing light to harden the sealants into place. Your sealants won’t move or wash away once they’ve been cured. Having sealants on your teeth is not an excuse to avoid brushing and flossing. Sealants often only work to protect the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, so you’ll still need to keep your smile clean and healthy. Your sealants can be reapplied as needed, and we often recommend them to pediatric patients who have already had one or more cavities.
