Inlays and Onlays
What are Inlays and Onlays?
An inlay and onlay are both restorations that help to cover a compromised tooth and enhance the look of your smile. You can think of either of these restorations as a mixture between a filling and a full dental crown. They’re more durable and long-lasting when compared to a filling, but they’re smaller in size to a full crown. Most inlays and onlays can last for decades without any special care or treatment.
Why are Inlays and Onlays needed?
Inlays sit on the inside of the cusps of a tooth while an onlay sits on the very top of the tooth. They may be needed if you have a large filling or an area of deep decay. Likewise, an onlay may be needed if a tooth has broken, chipped, or cracked only on the very top. These restorations are made to mimic the look and feel of a real tooth so that you can feel confident in your smile.
Who is a good candidate for Inlays and Onlays?
We will perform an examination to determine if and when you may need an inlay or onlay placed. We may recommend replacing older fillings with inlays or onlays to create a more long-lasting restorative option. You might benefit from either of these restorations if you need a crown, but do not need or want to compromise the structural integrity of the rest of the tooth.
What happens during the Inlay and Onlay procedure?
We start by removing any decay or old filling material from the tooth. If there’s a crack, chip, or break, we smooth this area before impressions are taken. Impressions, or molds, are useful in creating the new inlay or onlay that will be placed over the tooth. You’ll come in for a second appointment to have the actual restoration placed. With proper hygiene and care, your new inlay and onlay can last for many years.
If you think you might need either an inlay or onlay and want to come in for a consultation, call our office now and we can help answer all of your questions.
