What are Dental Implants?
Implants are titanium posts that are implanted deep into the bone of the jaw. Over the course of a few months, the implants naturally fuse with the bone. This creates a secure anchor for other dental restorations to be placed on top. You can have crowns, bridges and even dentures made specifically for your new implants.
Why are Dental Implants needed?
Implants are often needed when you’re missing one or more of your natural teeth. Implants essentially anchor any dental restoration needed. You might need a single crown to replace just one missing tooth or a full bridge. Other patients use their implants to securely keep a denture in place to prevent it from slipping throughout the day.
Who is a good candidate for Dental Implants?
You’re a good candidate for dental implants if you are able to undergo oral surgery and have the ability to heal from the procedure once it’s done. Likewise, you need enough solid, healthy bone structure in the area where the implants will be placed. If you’re lacking bone in these areas, you may need a bone graft before the surgery can be done. Most patients who want or need implants can safely and easily have the procedure done in our office.
What can you expect during the Dental Implant procedure?
We begin by administering either a local or general anesthetic to make the procedure comfortable for you. Once this is done, we will create a small incision through the gums and insert the implant. The implant is inserted deep into the bone of the jaw, giving it enough room to osseointegrate (fuse) with the surrounding bone. Once it’s bonded, you’ll come back in and have a special restoration made for the post. Implants can last for 20 to 30 years before they may need to be replaced, but it’s not uncommon to have implants that last much longer than this.
